10 Ways to Avoid a Bullshit Culture

I like to think your company culture is really about your beliefs and behaviours, and how well-aligned they are.

A great culture is where the beliefs (what you say you are) and the behaviours (the way you act) are aligned.

If they do, you're laughing. You're walking the walk, and likely leading a top-class culture.

If they don’t, well - you’re in a bit of trouble. Essentially, you’re not acting in a way that agrees with the things you say … I think the term we use is bullshit.

So, how do you avoid a bullshit culture? In simple terms - be honest, be accountable.

But, if you’re looking for a little more direction, you can avoid a bullshit culture by reflecting on the common habits of a healthy one (and adopting them.)

What does that look like? Well, we’ve compiled a neat list of ten characteristics and habits of a healthy culture -

  1. People have clear goals, aligned with the company's purpose.
  2. There is free-flowing communication across the company and within teams.
  3. People are cared for and have access to support.
  4. Respect is given (not earned) and this is clear in people’s interactions with each other.
  5. There’s transparency with mistakes and problems … and they actually get fixed.
  6. Leaders are accountable.
  7. People are encouraged to grow and develop.
  8. Feedback is taken onboard.
  9. Change isn’t just discussed, it happens.
  10. People talk openly about their challenges.

Everything on this list likely makes sense to you. Call me wild, but my belief is that they’re achievable in every company, so long as it has the desire to avoid a bullshit culture.

If you’re walking the walk already - bravo. Enjoy it.

If you’re not quite there yet, then I hope you soon will be. If you need a hand or someone to talk to about the challenges - let us know.
